More than anything, exercise requires dedication. You need to plan, start, and maintain a workout routine. Without dedication to your work, youβll lose all of that hard work and youβll end up having to start over.
Every time you quit youβre wasting your own time. That day off turning into a week off is not just a week of lost progress, itβs a week youβll never get back. When you feel like youβre not making anyΒ progressΒ in the gym itβs time to have an honest conversation with yourself. Are you tapping out early? Are you cutting corners?
Thereβs no shame in feeling like youβre lacking the motivation. Sometimes you need a top off. Today thatβs what weβre here for. Gathered below is wisdom from some of the greatest minds of our time.
Theyβre not all weightlifters, hell, some of them are from poets. The one thing they all have in common is drive, though. These people have become some of the most well renown folks in the world, and you donβt get to where they are by sitting on your butt and doing nothing all day. So gather around, grab a cup of coffee, and take a read, maybe youβll find some motivation here to keep at it.
Muhammad Ali is one of the most well-known boxers, if not human beings, in the entire world. He rose to the top and stayed there for years. He gave back to his community through philanthropy and extremely vocal advocation. His results backed up every single word that came out of his mouth. He was the best boxer of his time, and he remains to this day the only three-time heavyweight lineal champion.Β
He trained his heart out to earn those accolades.
You donβt become a pillar of strength and a world renown icon by quitting when the chips are down.
Venus Willams, much like Muhammad Ali, is at the top of her field. Her athleticism is far and away above the abilities of her peers. She and her sister have earned three Olympic gold medals today, and Venus earned on herself in tennis singles. She became the first black woman to reach number 1 in singles rankings since the Open Era started in 1968. Her wins are dominant, sheβs one of the few names to escape the tennis bubble. You canβt even talk about the solar system without mentioning Venus.Β Β
Jack Lalanne was a prolific fitness guru and motivational. Chasing a healthy lifestyle turned his life around. In his youth, he was troubled. He stirred up trouble nearly everywhere he went. He also described himself as a hopeless βjunk food junkieβ and a βsugarholicβ until he was fifteen.
He turned his life around after hearing health food pioneer Paul Bragg. That awoke a drive within him that he thought he would never have. That drive led him to open one of the first fitness gyms in Oakland, California at 21, publishing several books about getting healthy, and hosting his own television show, The Jack Lalanne show. He laid the ground for Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons.
He gained the respect of titans like Arnold Schwarzeneggar by out lifting them even late into life. In his fifties he was outperforming young men literally less than half his age. When he passed in 2009 his legacy endured. Arnold Schwarzeneggar called him βan apostle for fitness. Thatβs some of the highest praise you can get from the Terminator.Β Β
Jack Lalanne changed millions, if not billions of lives by teaching them effective fitness, setting them off down the road towards good health, and combining that with closer looks at their diet, and if his words donβt get you to work, maybe nothing else will.
We canβt talk about the man that inspired Arnold without talking about the big man himself.Β
Arnold Schwarzenegger immigrated to the United States at the age of 21 a few years after winning the Mr. Europe contest while serving in the Austrian military to fill in his mandatory year of service. To say he exemplified the American Dream would be an understatement. He came to the country, served as the chairman of the Presidentβs Council of Physical Fitness and Sports under George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He was the 38th Governor of California, serving for eight years.
His bodybuilding career opened doors for a rather unusual path through the acting world. He wasnβt just some hired muscle, a stunt guy, or some meathead villain. He played some of the most iconic roles in film history.Β He overcame his, at the time βstrange thick accent,β and βunconventional bodyβ and made the world accept him for who he was.
So maybe heβs got something to say aboutΒ motivation.
Maya Angelou might not have dominated on the tennis court or punched her way to unprecedented worldwide glory, but she did help usher in the Civil Rights movement. Her poetry will never move a weight, but it moved a generation.Β
She was eloquent, powerful, and influential. She changed the legal fabric of America forever by working with Martin Luther King and Malcom X. For a number of years, she was a college student, and then eventually an administrator at the University of Ghana. She moved back to America after meeting Malcom X during a brief visit. She picked up her life and moved back to America and helped build the Organization of Afro-American Unity.
She traveled the world and worked several odd jobs, from dancing and fry cooking to assisting in the decolonization of Africa in Egypt and Ghana. She had to get up out of bed every single day to do insanely hard work over the course of her life. Maya might not be a champion bodybuilder, but her legacy was engraved on the world through herculean effort and dedication that never wavered.
If she can do all that, you can do maybe one last rep. Let her mind for poetry feed you some motivational quotes.Β

Michael Jordan dominated the 90βs. Heβs been enshrined in the Basketball and FIBA Halls of Fame. Heβs gotten gold in the Olympics in basketball twice, as well as in the β83 Pam American Games. Heβs one of the only players to have saved the Looney Tunes by stretching his arm all the way across the court at the last possible second. If you had a dollar for each point heβs scored over his lifetime in the NBA youβd have enough cash to buy a pretty decent car.Β
His accolades are relentless. Michael Jordan is a six-time NBA champion, led in steals three ties, and earned NBA scoring champion 10 different times. In 2016 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Anybody that plays basketball professionally will tell you that Michael was the greatest to ever play.Β
