Screens are now woven into daily life. Many children watch television, use tablets, or play with smartphones before they enter school. For parents, educators, and clinicians, the central question is no longer whether screens exist in childhood. They do.

The more important question is how early, how often, and under what conditions screen use may affect a child’s developing brain.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding screen media before 18 months of age, except for video chatting, and limiting screen use to about one hour per day of high-quality programming for children ages 2 to 5 years. The World Health Organization similarly recommends no sedentary screen time for 1-year-olds and no more than one hour per day for children ages 2 to 4 years, with “less is better” as the guiding principle(1,2).

Research on screen time and child development has produced mixed findings. Some studies link heavier screen use with weaker language skills, poorer executive function, and lower academic performance. Others find small or no effects. The evidence is not simple, but it increasingly suggests that timing, amount, content, and family context all matter(3,4).

Why Early Childhood Matters

The first years of life are a period of rapid brain development. During infancy and early childhood, children are building the foundations for language, memory, attention, self-control, problem-solving, and social-emotional regulation.

This period is marked by high neuroplasticity, which means the brain is especially responsive to experience. In practical terms, the young brain is constantly adjusting to what a child sees, hears, practices, and repeats. Conversation, shared reading, physical play, sleep, and responsive caregiving all help shape the systems that later support learning.

Because different abilities mature at different times, screen exposure may not have the same meaning at every age. An hour of screen time for a 12-month-old, who is still learning through touch, movement, facial expression, and back-and-forth interaction, is different from an hour of carefully chosen educational content for a preschooler watching with a parent.

How Screens May Affect Learning

Researchers have proposed several explanations for why heavy screen exposure might be linked with later learning difficulties.

The first is the displacement hypothesis. Time spent with screens may replace activities that are especially valuable for development, such as talking with caregivers, being read to, playing with other children, exploring objects, moving the body, or engaging in imaginative play. The concern is not that every screen experience is harmful. Rather, screen time can crowd out experiences that are more active, social, and language-rich.

The second is the video deficit hypothesis. Very young children often learn less from screens than from real-life interaction. A toddler may see someone stack blocks on a tablet but fail to repeat the action afterward, even though the same toddler might imitate it easily after watching an adult do it in person. Young children are still learning how to connect two-dimensional images on a screen with the three-dimensional world around them(5).

This helps explain why screen exposure during infancy may be particularly important. Babies and toddlers learn best through direct interaction: faces, voices, touch, movement, and immediate responses from other people.

What This Study Examined

In a Singaporean birth cohort, researchers followed 502 children from infancy into middle childhood. Parents reported their child’s screen viewing time at ages 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 6, and 8 years. Later, trained psychologists assessed academic performance at age 9 and working memory at age 10.5 years(6).

Academic performance included skills such as reading, spelling, and mathematics.

Working memory refers to the ability to hold and use information for a short period of time. It is the mental workspace that allows a child to follow multi-step directions, solve a math problem, or remember what they are doing while completing a task.
The researchers examined screen exposure in two ways. First, they looked at screen time at specific ages to see whether certain developmental periods were more sensitive. Second, they looked at cumulative screen exposure across childhood to estimate whether repeated or sustained exposure carried additional risk.

What the Researchers Found

The clearest pattern was seen for academic performance. More screen viewing at ages 1 year, 1.5 years, and 6 years was associated with lower academic scores at age 9. The strongest associations appeared during infancy, although screen exposure around school entry also seemed relevant(6).

The findings for working memory were less consistent. Screen viewing at ages 1 and 6 years was associated with weaker working memory at age 10.5, but the overall pattern was not as strong as it was for academic performance.

This distinction matters. Academic tests, especially reading and spelling, depend heavily on language exposure, attention, and accumulated learning. Working memory is important too, but it may be influenced by a different mix of developmental and environmental factors.

How Large Were the Effects?

The effects were modest. In this study, each additional hour of daily screen viewing was associated with approximately 1 to 1.5 fewer standard-score points in academic performance.6 For a single child, that difference may not be noticeable.

At the population level, however, small shifts can matter. If an entire group of children moves slightly downward in average academic performance, more children may fall near or below thresholds where school support becomes necessary. This is why researchers and public health experts pay attention even to modest effects when the exposure is widespread.

Why the Evidence Is Mixed

Screen time does not occur in isolation. Children who use screens more heavily may also differ in sleep, physical activity, reading time, family stress, household routines, parental education, and access to learning resources.

In the Singapore study, the strength of the screen time association decreased after researchers adjusted for family and home-environment factors. That does not erase the finding. It does show that screens are part of a broader developmental context, not a single cause acting alone(6).

This is one reason studies sometimes disagree. Some measure television only, while others include tablets, smartphones, computers, and gaming. Some focus on toddlers, while others study school-age children. Some distinguish educational content from passive viewing, while others measure only total time.

Content and Context Matter

The amount of screen time is important, but it is not the whole story. A child watching an age-appropriate educational program with a caregiver is having a different experience from a child watching fast-paced videos alone for long periods.

Co-viewing, or watching together with an adult, can help children understand what they see and connect it to real life. Content quality also matters. Educational programming designed with child-development principles may support learning in preschool-age children, while background television, rapid-fire videos, or apps with distracting features may interfere with attention and parent-child interaction(1,7).

For infants and toddlers, the bar should be especially high. At this age, the best learning still comes from responsive, face-to-face interaction.

What This Means for Parents

This study does not mean that every minute of screen time is harmful. It also does not suggest that parents should feel guilty when screens are used occasionally or practically. Screens are part of modern family life.

The more useful message is about priorities.

During the first two years of life, babies benefit most from direct interaction with people and the physical world. Talking, singing, reading, cuddling, playing, and moving are not simply pleasant activities. They are the raw materials of brain development.

As children approach school age, screen habits continue to matter. Around age 6, screen viewing may begin competing more directly with reading, homework, sleep, outdoor play, and other routines that support learning.

A reasonable goal is not perfection, but balance. Screens should not routinely replace sleep, movement, conversation, reading, or play.

Take home message

This 10-year study suggests that greater screen exposure in early childhood, especially during infancy and again around school entry, is associated with slightly poorer academic performance later in childhood. The evidence for working memory was weaker and less consistent.

The findings fit with a larger body of research showing that young children learn best through active, social, real-world experiences. Screens may have a place in childhood, particularly when content is high quality and adults are engaged. But in the earliest years, no screen can fully substitute for the learning that happens through conversation, play, movement, and human connection.
